One of the original judges at the first Alcuin book design competition, Frank Newfeld, book designer, illustrator, art director, and former Vice President, Publishing at McClelland & Stewart, shared some of his thoughts on illustrated books, particularly those for the younger reader. This should be of special interest to fans of Newfeld’s illustrations for Alligator Pie (poems byDennis Lee).

This is a video archive of Design Speaker Series 1, presented by the Society of Graphic Designers BC Chapter. The sold out event took place at Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver, BC on Thursday, October 18th, 2007.

This event was not only a learning opportunity and networking event for designers, but a celebration of the launch of the new book Logo Savvy: Top Brand-Design Firms Share Their Naming and Identity Strategies. This unique book showcases some of the world's top brand identity firms as they explain how they go about creating names and identity designs for their clients.

The evening included special presentations of thoughtful case studies as top design industry professionals dissected the branding process, followed by a panel discussion with questions and answers from the audience of over 200. Speakers included Perry Chua (Author), Dann Ilicic (WOW Branding), Mark Popich (Hornall Anderson Design Works) and James Bateman (Karacters).

Since 1977, excellence in communication design has been celebrated at Graphex–a biennial competition showcasing the best of cultural, social and business communications from across Canada. As part of the GDC's goal to create an ongoing archive of Canadian design, Graphex is a national event - open to designers from across Canada.

This video is an overview of Graphex 2000 with discussions among the international judging panel comprised of Bill Cahan, Rick Poynor, Rita Sasges and Colin Watson.
